Words are like string, weave ‘em together and you get lace. Using those minor ands buts and thes of the world, I write novels about art and about art to talk about people, design about culture and culture to tell stories about who we are and why. I try to string these all together to show how this connects to that and that to something else. Like an aphid, a queen, a 21 year-old William Pitt and the Ozarks in The Angel’s Share to tell the story of scotch. Which is partly the story of Scotland but also globalization and people.

I’ve been an editor at the American design magazine ID as well as the British style magazine The Face and men’s magArena. (Notice a trend here? None of them exist anymore….) My stories and profiles have appeared in publications from the Financial Times to The GuardianWiredWallpaper*,Condé Nast TravelerNew YorkThe Evening StandardThe New York TimesSalonIntersection and Metropolis where I’m a contributing editor. Also you can check out my take on design at frieze.com where I scribe Subject Object, a column on design.
